Exporting Art

I've spent some of this evening mounting and framing three pictures which my dad, Bill of Ballaugh, wants to take back to Eire with him next week. I'm surprised by his choice of the painting of the torso, as it's not what I'd have imagined in a million years that he'd have chosen. And though the other two are of grandchildren, I'm happy that they're of my 'better' drawings.

The support and encouragement and gentle shoving my family have shown me this year in my art has been awesome. It was lovely to show my father round my studio yesterday, and he was full of ideas for organised storage. Not full of offers to build stuff, I noticed, but full of ideas none the less.

Oh and he kindly bought me some more canvases, a metal ruler, and went on to hint strongly that he'd love a painting of Penshaw Monument, a local landmark.

Ooh, Penshaw monument. What a good idea. I enjoyed your sketches of London but I'd be much more interested to see what you make of local scenes. You are a ROKER artist, after all.

It's quite a cliche'd subject - all the local artists paint it. I'll bet you can come up with an original angle on it, though. A uniquely Stephanie angle.

Ooh, ooh, and the Angel of the North. If it moves you, will you do an Angel of the North for me?

My early memories of Penshaw are of trudging up the path, with the monument looming overhead, so it would probably be that kind of a view.
I like the Angel, but I've never been up close to it.
What other local scenes? I had a fantastic afternoon on the top floor of the library on Fawcette Street looking down at the shoppers in the bus queues with herring gulls flying between me and them, a very bizzarre and memorable view.
Odd perspective angles seems to be a pattern that's emerging here.
I'd also like to capture to strobe effect view of the river I get in a car whilst driving over Queen Alexander bridge. I have a lot of work ahead of me, I know.

Personally I think Fulwell Windmill would be a perfect local scene.
I completely agree with your dad, by the way, as I told you yesterday, that picture of rebecca laying on the sofa, and the one of TJ watching the TV, well, they're both just gorgeous.

Langham Towers, the Pharmacy College, The Chesters Hotel, Alexandra Bridge, Kayll Road Library (a happy hunting ground of my childhood in the 1940's and '50's), a row of Sunderland cottages, the Alms Houses at Whitburn. Need I go on? And thanks a million for both the works you have done, and let me see, and for those you so kindly gave me. They will be hung with pride and viewed with pleasure.
