with turps, and made these corrections. I'm ready for a cup of coffee now. I think I've nailed him. The trick now is not to loose him again in the re-painting.An hour of frustration, then I squinted and obliterated all detail with blocks of tone. After a while painting on A5 I switched to a square format. I used the end of a wooden skewer, then end of a paintbrush and a watercolour brush to vary the marks. These are not finished. When they're dry I want to keep working over them, maybe cut them up, layer them, wash away areas if I can. We had a fantastic time at the Quilts exhibition, stumbled over some breathtaking Rodin sculptures, and I was awe struck by Norwegian door carvings. The centre core looked like some kind of muscular organ, and the seeds appeared alien for some reason. It was as though I'd discovered a hidden universe. I drew it in pencil, and ate it. Later that day I went over my sketch in a permanent fineliner, and played around with watercolour. The neutral grey-green ground is a fantastic foil for the subtly warm whites. It's the softest lilac with pale green at the top of each bell, and deep purple splotches inside. In fact I'm loving the effect dip pens have on simple lines. They're not as random to use a a stick dipped in ink, or as uniform as fine-liners. Brush pens create a sweeping line with smooth edges.
